Chokhor Duchen Festival
Chokhor Duchen Festival
Chokhor Duchen (Chokhor means “praying wheel” and “Duchen” means “great occasion” in Tibetan), also known as Buddha’s Sermon Festival, falls on the fourth day of the sixth month in Tibetan calendar. It is celebrated for commemorating Shakyamuni’s first sermon after attaining enlightenment. People, in their best conduct during the occasion, go to monasteries to show their respects to the Buddha. Circumambulation around the mountains is the popular practice during the festival. Picnicking, singing and dancing are also part of the event.
